The scope and profoundness of the British-related material recently unearthed from our Foundation’s archives has increasingly drawn our attention to the significance of Otto von Habsburg’s island nexus. From the documents we have processed so far, it has become apparent that our namesake considered Britain to have a unique role in shaping the common European future, as its imperial past can provide a global perspective on integration, even more so through its political traditions and values, as well as a balancing factor, it can contribute immensely towards a stronger and more harmonious European community.
In addition to the discussion, which was particularly topical in the light of Brexit, Ambassador Fox keenly examined the British-related material in the Foundation’s care, including Otto von Habsburg’s correspondence with several prominent politicians, along with a signed copy of Winston Churchill’s two-volume work on the life of the First Duke of Marlborough, which is of considerable historical and literary significance. In connection with the above, we also covered our Foundation’s forthcoming events in November, which will focus on our namesake’s British ties to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the iconic Prime Minister, which the Embassy is helping to facilitate.
The Ambassador was accompanied to the meeting by Levente Nyitrai, Attaché of the British Embassy in Budapest, whose family has many ties to Charles of Austria and Otto von Habsburg.
