The exhibition illustrates how, following the cataclysm of the Second World War, Otto von Habsburg played a pivotal role in developing international ties between Japan and the transatlantic region. His efforts contributed to strengthening the island nation’s global prestige and reputation while fostering economic relations and political cooperation. From the 1950s onwards, the Archduke was a frequent visitor to Japan, where his impressive networking skills enabled him to establish close contact with members of the imperial family and an increasing number of prominent politicians, including several prime ministers and business leaders.

Furthermore, his work in the European Parliament, particularly his involvement in the Pan-European Picnic, aimed at dismantling totalitarian regimes driven by communist ideology and the Iron Curtain, significantly inspired Japanese political actors and public opinion.

From the Japanese-related materials in the care of the Otto von Habsburg Foundation in Budapest, the most essential elements have been highlighted on the roll-up displays, which not only provide useful source for understanding the nature, specificities, and complexities of the Cold War and the post-Cold War world order but also serve as a valuable reference for contemporary international political thought and action.
