The Rubicon Institute and the Otto von Habsburg Foundation are organising a discussion entitled Otto von Habsburg – Rubicon-Evening to mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of Otto von Habsburg.

Date: 20 October 20, 2022 (Thursday) 18:00

Venue: Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Hungary – chapel (1088 Budapest, Szentkirályi St 51)

This year we celebrate the 110th anniversary of the birth of Otto von Habsburg, whose diverse and rich public and political legacy is still relevant today. One of its major pillars was his consistent struggle for a united, free and sovereign Europe based on Christian values and the principle of subsidiarity derived from them.

He paid particular attention to the peoples and countries formerly part of the Habsburg Monarchy, consistently advocating throughout his career the right of the Central European nations to self-determination, and doing much to promote their international diplomatic recognition and Euro-Atlantic integration.

The discussion aims to shed light on the work of Otto von Habsburg along these two main lines, and thus to highlight the historical significance and the ideological influence of the last Hungarian heir to the throne.

What was the significance of Otto von Habsburg in the process of European integration? What was the last Hungarian heir to the throne’s vision of Europe?

These are some of the questions the speakers will be looking for answers to.

Discussants:

Gergely Prőhle, diplomat, Director of the Otto von Habsburg Foundation

Gergely Fejérdy, diplomatic historian, Deputy Scientific Director of the Otto von Habsburg Foundation

Moderator of the discussion:

Gábor Péterfi, research fellow, Rubicon Institute
