EXILED IN MADEIRA

EXHIBITION COMMEMORATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF EMPEROR AND KING CHARLES IV (I)

A selection from the collections of the Regional Archive and Public Library of Madeira and the Otto von Habsburg Foundation

On 19 November 1921, King Charles IV (I), banished from his throne, and Queen Zita of Bourbon-Parma arrived on the island of Madeira, where they spent a few months of their exile with their children, who later joined them. The last monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire died on 1 April 1922. It was a fateful turning point for the whole family, but above all, for the heir to the throne, Otto von Habsburg, who was then barely ten years old. In 2022, to mark the centenary of the death of Charles IV (I), the Regional Archive and Public Library of Madeira has organised an exhibition with documents from its collection to commemorate the time spent by the royal family and their relationship with the islanders. The Otto von Habsburg Foundation supported the exhibition in Funchal through a cooperation agreement with the State Secretariat for Culture in Madeira and is now displaying it in Hungary, with additions from its collection and some more relevant information for the Hungarian public.

The exhibition is curated by Eszter Fábry and Beáta Vitos-Merza
Translation and proofreading by Emese Rasztovich and Eszter Fábry
Original design by Andreia Baltazar
Graphics by Laura Balázs and Szilveszter Dékány
Organised by Laura Balázs and Lili Herczeg
Execution by DECORARTIVE Ltd. and the staff of the Otto von Habsburg Foundation

The exhibition is open until 1 April 2023 in the Royal Palace of Gödöllő.

Opening hours and further information can be found on the website of the Royal Palace of Gödöllő.
