When Regina Princess of Saxe-Meiningen was born in Würzburg on January 6, 1925, the era of politically arranged marriages between members of European aristocratic families was long over. Since its foundation in 1680, the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen had also known how to repeatedly expand its initially small territory through arranged, strategically motivated marriages. Conversely, there were also many genuine love marriages, often with bourgeois partners. These “morganatic” marriages include those of Duke Anton Ulrich with the chambermaid Philippine Caesar or the marriage of the “theater duke” George II to the actress Ellen Franz, later Helene, Baroness of Heldburg. The marriage of the Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary Otto von Habsburg to Regina Princess of Saxe-Meiningen in 1951 united two members of the European high nobility in a marriage of love and mutual respect that lasted almost 60 years.
But who was the Thuringian Princess Regina of Saxe-Meiningen (1925– 2010), who spent her childhood and youth at Elisabethenburg Castle and Heldburg Castle, and who maintained close ties to her homeland throughout her life, even during the decades of German division?

The exhibition “Regina von Habsburg – Prinzessin von Sachen-Meiningen”, which was jointly conceived by the Meininger Museums and the Otto von Habsburg Foundation, in cooperation with the German Castle Museum Heldburg on the occasion of her 100th birthday on January 6, 2025, explores this question.

Portraits, photographs and personal items such as clothes from Regina von Habsburg‘s estate will be on public display for the first time, including musical instruments she played and the baby carriage in which Regina took her children for a walk.
