Start to the year in the collection 2024

Photography – historical documentation – political awareness

On Hungarian Culture Day, the Otto von Habsburg Foundation organises its New Year’s event entitled “Start to the Year in the Collection”, during which we will present not only the latest results of the archival work in our collection but the recently released publication 99 Years, 99 Pictures – Photographs from the life of Otto von Habsburg as well.

The new photo book, prepared by the Foundation and Helikon Publishers, leads the reader through the life of Otto von Habsburg, taking us to previously unknown places and scenes—Ninety-nine eventful years in 99 pictures, from his early childhood to the end of his life. The volume contains photographs from 23 countries on four continents, some by renowned photographers, with detailed descriptions in 5 languages: English, German, French, Spanish and Hungarian. It draws on the Foundation’s rich visual heritage, the approximately 30,000 images of its collection. Nevertheless, the book is not merely unique in terms of photographic history and art but also provides an opportunity to discuss the methodology of dealing with visual history sources and to reflect on the changes in political awareness brought about by the rapid growth in the significance of images.
