The Great War and Charles of Austria-Hungary

On September 16, 2025, renowned researchers of World War I visited our Foundation.

Tamás Pintér, Norbert Stencinger, Ferenc Pollmann and Balázs Juhász are distinguished scholars of the Hungarian regiments and of the battlefields of Doberdò, Isonzo, Piave and the region of Gorizia, as well as of the period diaries that bear witness to those events. During their visit, our senior archivist colleague Ádám Suslik offered an introduction to the work of our Foundation, and proceeded to acquaint our guests with a selection from our holdings: photo albums, decorations and commemorative plaques pertaining chiefly to the Great War and the Italian front, together with the surviving correspondence and writings of the generals and of Emperor Charles himself.

This topic played a significant role in the life of Otto von Habsburg as well, for in 1977, he visited the Doberdò plateau in the company of Gottfried von Banfield, Captain at Sea and the last living Knight of the Military Order of Maria Theresa, to pay tribute to Charles and one of the most fateful epochs of the twentieth century.

The meeting also afforded the opportunity to exchange views on the prospects for future collaboration.
