The meeting provided an opportunity to review key aspects of Hungarian–Bulgarian historical and cultural relations, as well as the prospects for cooperation between the two countries. The discussion also touched upon Otto von Habsburg’s role in supporting the European integration of the peoples of Central and Eastern Europe, including Bulgaria.
During her visit, Ambassador Anguelieva viewed several notable items from the Foundation’s collection, among them the Grand Cross of the Bulgarian Order of Saint Alexander. She showed particular interest in documents referring to the relationship between Otto von Habsburg and Tsar Simeon II of Bulgaria. Anguelieva herself had previously served as a member of the Bulgarian parliament representing the National Movement for Simeon II – later renamed the National Movement for Stability and Progress – founded by the former Bulgarian monarch.
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was noted that our Foundation will host an event in Sofia on 11 March with the participation of Tsar Simeon II and Georg von Habsburg. The Ambassador welcomed the news with great interest and expressed her hope that a joint event could also be organized in Budapest in the future.
