He has published numerous books on international relations, human rights and migration studies, and recently released his diary entries spanning more than half a century, in which we can read about political developments, personal encounters and experiences in astonishing detail. The professor was also an active participant in politics as a speechwriter for Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker and later as an advisor to Hans-Gert Pöttering.
With Professor Kühnhardt, we discussed our archival material and recalled the conference entitled “50 Years of Peace, 5 Years of Democracy” organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in spring 1995, which had included speakers such as Géza Jeszenszky, Otto Graf Lambsdorff, Viktor Orbán, Robert Nef, of course Ludger Kühnhardt and the ground-breaking Professor Hans-Peter Schwarz, who, as biographer of Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl, had given a powerful lecture on the lessons of German reunification. We are planning to organise a conference next year to recall what had been said thirty years ago and to remember those who are no longer with us – Count Lambsdorff, who passed away in 2009, and Professor Schwarz, who left us seven years ago.
Thanks to the organised collection of Ludger Kühnhardt, we are able to present photos from the event almost 30 years ago.
