Patrick J. Deneen, American political scientist and professor at the University of Notre Dame recently published a book entitled Why Liberalism Failed. He was the guest speaker at a conference entitled Why liberalism prospered and failed, on 15 November 2019, organized by the Otto von Habsburg Foundation, the Pázmány Péter Catholic University and Libri Hungary Book Publishing Ltd. The purpose of our discussion was to place the author’s thoughts in the context of Hungarian intellectual and political history,
and to compare his view on liberalism with the fiercely critical view shared by many in Hungarian public life today. Particular attention was paid to the fundamental attributes of liberalism and whether global prosperity has also contributed to its failure.
