On 16 October 2022, an exhibition commemorating Count Antal Sigray – the “politician of honour” – was officially opened in Ivánc, in the county of Vas. The life of Count Sigray is connected in many ways to Austrian Emperor and Hungarian King Charles von Habsburg and his son Otto von Habsburg.

The aristocrat, who died 65 years ago, was present at the last Hungarian king’s attempted return to power in 1921. On the death of Count József Károlyi in 1934, at the request of the former heir to the throne, he took over the leadership of the legitimist movement.

Between the two wars, Otto von Habsburg maintained close relations with Count Sigray and his secretary, Barna Sárkány. The collection preserved by the Otto von Habsburg Foundation contains several letters and photographic portraits of the former politician, copies of which have enriched the displayed exhibit. At the event, our Foundation honoured the memory of King Charles IV, who died 100 years ago, with a roll-up exhibition.

Tibor Gyarmati, the mayor of the village, welcomed the guests at the memorial site in the former parish hall. He was followed by several local and national dignitaries, including Zoltán Vámos, government commissioner of Vas County; Zsolt V. Németh, Member of Parliament; Márton Békés, historian and Sigray-researcher, and Baron József Schell, on behalf of the Count’s heirs.

Gergely Fejérdy, deputy scientific director of the Otto von Habsburg Foundation, and Miklós Melega, director of the Vas County Archives, spoke at the opening of the Charles IV and Trianon 100 exhibitions.
