“If it wasn’t for your aunt, I would be praying in German today” Visit by Gusztáv Hittig

On 8 June 2022, Gusztáv Hittig visited our Foundation – he is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the International Education and Research Centre Foundation, historian of physics, former President of the Emperor Karl League of Prayer, close friend of the Habsburg family.

During his visit, he brought valuable material to our collection, as the sister of his grandfather, Sister Melissa (Daughters of Divine Love Congregation), was the first Hungarian educator of Otto von Habsburg until 1918. Thus, among other things, he donated to our Foundation some of her postcards, a letter addressed to Otto von Habsburg by his mother and a reply to it, as well as his own book and other interesting documents.

While viewing our collection, he talked about his relationship and meetings with our namesake, and that when he asked Otto von Habsburg why he felt so attached to Hungary, the former heir to the throne replied: ,,since I pray in Hungarian.” In this single sentence he wanted to express not only his love for his country, but also that he had learned to pray from Sister Melissa, and therefore he adressed the Lord in Hungarian until his old age. Otto von Habsburg wrote about it also on a small note to Gusztáv Hittig: “…if it wasn’t for your aunt, I would be praying in German today.”
