A few weeks ago, the President of the Robert Schuman Foundation published a short paper entitled “Essential Europe”, in which he points out that Europe can serve as an example in dealing with the crises of our time. In the shadow of the Russia-Ukraine war, he recalls that the nations of the Old Continent, divided for centuries and almost constantly at war, at the initiative of a handful of courageous politicians, in the context of the Cold War, learned how to manage their differences – without open confrontation. The European Union, he writes, despite all its internal tensions, has created a more united, civilised, non-violent social order that “carries a message of progress to the whole planet”. With this in mind, he believes that the survival and strengthening of the European Union is desirable, not least for reasons of global politics.
On the occasion of Europe Day and 72 years after the announcement of the Schuman Plan, we have a discussion with two highly respected experts and experienced European politicians on how to make the idea of Europe being essential more widely recognised. We will examine whether the EU can respond to the challenges of the present, how well it can represent the real interests of the continent’s citizens, and how it can be a real example to the world. Speakers will also share their views on the possible direction of development they see necessary to make Europe truly essential.

The discussion will be in French and Hungarian, with simultaneous interpretation provided in Hungarian, French and English.

We look forward to welcoming you at our event!
