Otto von Habsburg in the volume on Europe

Hungary held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2024, which, beyond opening way for several political discussions, also provided the opportunity to organise a number of international professional events and to publish a unique volume.

Our Foundation organised several events dedicated to Hungary’s second term holding the Presidency of the EU Council between 1 July and 31 December 2024, and contributed to the meetings of EU archival leaders held in Budapest and to the volume published by the National Archives of Hungary, all within the framework of the Hungarian Presidency.

In the course of the gathering of the European Board of National Archivists (EBNA) in October, representatives of the delegations arriving in Hungary visited our Foundation. And in November, we hosted the first day of the annual meeting of the European Union Diplomatic Archives (EUDiA), an international organisation of directors of foreign ministry archives and institutes in EU Member States.

The special book Europe – Forging a Union for Peace, published by the National Archives of Hungary on the occasion of these prestigious events, presents the lives and work of prominent individuals who contributed significantly to the advancement of European integration and the birth of the European Union of today. The rich and varied anthology includes biographical descriptions as well as various types of documents preserved in the different archives, paying tribute to the distinguished public figures appearing on the pages of this volume. Hungary is represented in the selection by the namesake of our Foundation. Szilveszter Dékány, Senior Collection Fellow at our Foundation, was involved in the compilation of the book, while the chapter on Otto von Habsburg was written by Bence Kocsev, Research Fellow of our Foundation.

The digital version of the book is available by clicking here.
