It is a special occasion to welcome a high-ranking Holy See official such as Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity. This post was founded by Pope John XXIII in 1960, when, following the decisions of the Second Vatican Council, Rome’s position on ecumenism changed substantially: the promotion of relations with other denominations and, of course, theological reflection on this issue were elevated to a high level of ecclesiastical leadership.
